Muscle relaxants such as Soma or Tramadol are part of a wide spectrum of medications that have different uses and mechanisms of action, though they ultimately lead to the same effect. Muscle relaxant medications are counted as being among the options that a patient has when dealing with lower back pain. An estimated 35% of patients who visit a physician within a year are doing so due to lower back pain, making it the most likely reason for a medical consultation. Muscle relaxants are just one of the options, though they are among the more commonly prescribed ones.

For acute lower back pain, muscle relaxants are used to improve the situation by reducing pain signals, muscle tension, and improving mobility. They have consistently proven more effective in these tasks than placebos do. The ability to relieve pain is the foremost purpose, as most doctors see it as the first step leading to the overall improvement of the patient’s condition. However, there are still side effects that will appear. The appearance of these effects can vary in likelihood, frequency, and intensity, and depend on numerous factors.

Antispasmodics, a type of pain medication, are used to decrease muscle spasms that are commonly associated with the conditions that cause back pain. These drugs are often classified into two major groups: the benzodiazepines and the nonbenzodiazepines. The benzodiazepines are largely sedative medications, with anxiolytics, hypnotics, and anticonvulsants being among them, aside from skeletal muscle relaxants. The other variant are medications that act on the spinal cord, the mechanisms of which have not been clearly understood yet.

Two medications, Carisoprodol and metaxalone, have moderate antispasmodic effects and are known to have mild sedative properties. The drug functions by blocking interneuronal activity in the brain and spinal cord. When metabolized, Carisoprodol becomes an anti-anxiety agent named meprobamate, which is known to relieve muscle spasms associated with anxiety attacks.
