The mattress
of one’s bed is the surface that a person’s back will be resting
on for a long, long time. Therefore, it is usually in a person’s best
interest to make sure it is soft enough to be comfortable, but also
firm enough to offer the back proper support. A good mattress can keep
a person’s back from becoming deformed or damaged, while a bad one
can cause a lot of harm. The fact that people spend so much time on
their backs when they sleep only makes it clearer that the mattress
that one rests on for so many hours should be good. However, there are
times when people simply can’t tell whether or not they have a good
mattress.
One sign of
a problem can come in the form of waking up with a stiff back, or with
back pain. Improper support of the back can result in undue strain on
the muscles and bones, and the additional pressure can result in back
pain when the person wakes up. One reason this might happen is bad sleeping
posture, but it is also possible that the mattress itself at fault.
Some mattresses, after a lengthy amount of time, can become uneven,
and can cause the back to experience additional stress during sleep.
One might also
be inclined to check the bed thoroughly. The physical state of the mattress
can mean a lot in terms of how different it would be as a means of back
support. For example, there might be areas where it sags, usually where
the person has lied on for a prolonged period. The edges of the mattress
are also common areas. Some parts of it may also be more comfortable
than others, which can be a sign of damage on the interior. Creaking
and crunching when one move could indicate that the bed’s structure
itself has been damaged, and the damage is probably very bad if it wobbles
or sways at sudden movements.
One interesting
sign of potential damage would be rolling. Damaged beds that more than
one person sleep on have a tendency to cause both partners to roll towards
the center of the bed in most cases. This is most frequent on beds that
have seen years of use nightly, usually around eight to ten years of
use.
